6 Letter Word Finder: A Full List Plus a Few Strategies

6 Letter Word Finder

Six-letter words sit in a useful middle ground. They are long enough to score well and fill difficult puzzle spaces, but short enough to build from a typical seven-tile rack. In Wordscapes, Jumble, crosswords, and other word games, the sixth letter is often the one that turns an obvious base into a stubborn answer.

No article can print every six-letter word from every English and word-game dictionary. The official Collins Scrabble list alone contains more than a quarter of a million permissible words of all lengths, and regional lists do not match perfectly. A truly complete result must be generated from the letters and dictionary you are using. The A-to-Z list below is a practical reference of common words, plus a few game-friendly entries for difficult letters.

How to find every six-letter word from your letters

Open the 6 letter word finder, enter your available letters, and set both Min Len and Max Len to 6. The results will then contain only six-letter possibilities.

If you know more about the answer, add one filter at a time:

  • Use Starts With when the first letter or opening group is known.
  • Use Ends With for a known ending such as ER, ED, or ING.
  • Use Must Contain for letters that must appear.
  • Use Exclude Letters for letters ruled out by a puzzle.
  • Enter ? or * for a blank tile.

Six-letter patterns worth learning

Four-letter base plus a two-letter ending

Many six-letter words are ordinary four-letter words with a familiar ending:

  • WORK + ER = WORKER
  • PLAY + ER = PLAYER
  • WALK + ED = WALKED
  • QUICK + LY = QUICKLY

When you see E and R together, do not assume they form ER, but test that ending early. The same applies to ED, ES, LY, and EN.

Three-letter base plus ING

Six-letter ING words often begin with a three-letter root: ASKING, EATING, SKIING, and TRYING. Spelling changes can occur, so watch for dropped or doubled letters in longer words.

Repeated letters

Six-letter answers commonly hide a duplicate: BANANA, DINNER, EFFECT, LITTLE, PEOPLE, and YELLOW. Count the rack before searching. A result with two N's cannot be built from one N unless a wildcard supplies the second.

Common endings

Useful six-letter endings include:

  • ER: banker, driver, farmer, leader, reader
  • ED: closed, formed, opened, played, turned
  • ING: asking, coming, dining, living, voting
  • LY: calmly, deeply, freely, kindly, softly
  • TION: action, nation, notion, option

Strategy for Scrabble and Words With Friends

A six-letter play does not receive the all-seven-tiles bonus, but it can leave one excellent tile for the next turn. Look beyond the word's face value:

  1. Check whether the play reaches a double-word or triple-word square.
  2. Look for perpendicular cross-words created by several newly placed tiles.
  3. Avoid leaving a rack full of vowels or duplicate consonants.
  4. Keep a flexible final tile such as E, R, S, or a blank when the board allows it.
  5. Do not open an easy premium lane for the next player unless the score justifies it.

Strategy for Wordscapes

Wordscapes combines a letter wheel with a crossword-style grid. Start with the longest visible slot, but also enter short words to reveal crossing letters. If the wheel contains six letters, the longest answer often uses all six, while shorter valid words may fill the grid or count as bonus words.

Use the grid as a filter. A six-letter space with E as the second letter and R at the end is much easier than an open six-letter search. If a level still refuses an ordinary valid word, it may be a bonus word rather than one of the required grid answers. The site's Wordscapes Answers and Cheat page can help narrow the wheel letters without spending an in-game hint.

Six-letter word questions

What are good six-letter words with high-value letters?

Examples include JACKET, JIGSAW, JOYFUL, OXYGEN, PUZZLE, QUARTZ, QUIVER, and ZIGZAG. The best play still depends on board bonuses and cross-words.

Can a blank make a six-letter word?

Yes. Enter the known tiles plus one wildcard. Remember that a physical blank normally scores zero points even when it represents a valuable letter.

Why does one finder accept a word another rejects?

They may use different lexicons. General dictionaries, North American Scrabble, international Scrabble, and Words With Friends do not have identical accepted-word lists.
